Tantine, ba kati mwinda (2023)

Although construction of a hydroelectric plant on the Congo River has recently begun, the power generated will primarily benefit South Africa and the mining companies operating in Congo for its resource wealth. The Congolese people, more than 100 million people, will remain sidelined from these profits from their own land. Yet the lack of electricity does not mean that life comes to a standstill. On the contrary: the power and fire in Congolese women continue to burn unabated. She becomes the light – a living symbol of hope and potential.

This work places the “tantine” (the aunt) at the center: she is the source of light, an inner strength that keeps going, regardless of circumstances. Together, these women form a beating organ of a vibrant city full of unfulfilled possibilities. Editions of 8 available at  EENWERK GALLERY, AMSTERDAM
